Iceland Adventure

  • Hellnar West Iceland Iceland

Join Maine Yoga Adventures on a magical adventure to an incredibly sought out locale - ICELAND. Adventurers will enjoy hot springs, hiking, yoga, horseback riding, glaciers, waterfalls, fjords, yummy vegan/vegetarian food, the northern lights and more...

The adventure begins with a divine dip at the Blue Lagoon, one of the 25 wonders of the world. This is as touristy as we'll get so we might as well get the fabulousness over with! It truly is a wonderous place...

Adventurers will relax away their flights and indulge in the silky white water packed with tremendous health benefits. The geothermal water has a unique combo of ingredients - silica, algae and minerals. Ahhh...

The adventure continues as we make our way past breathtakingly beautiful landscapes towards our next destination, Hellnar...

really, it gets more & more gorgeous!

Hellnar is an ancient fishing village beneath the Snaefellsjokull glacier, the king of Icelandic mountains, in the Snaefellsjokull National Park on the westernmost part of the Snaefellsnes peninsula. One of Iceland's most peculiar caves, Badstofa, is there, known for its special light exposure and colorful interior. And the seabirds, they are aplenty and such a delight to see and hear!

For our first two nights in Iceland, our accommodations are at two private houses settled in between the sea and the mountains. Adventurers will have both indoor and outdoor yoga practices, two breakfasts & two dinners, plenty of time to explore nature, and share laughter & stories with our community of adventurers. Machelle LaHaye will be assisting Holly in this adventure with both cooking & yoga - she's a certified yoga teacher and an amazing vegetarian/vegan cook.

We'll enjoy terrific hikes and spectacular views as we explore the nature reserves and the stunning Snaefellsjokull National Park. And, hopefully in the evenings adventures will get sightings of those amazing Northern Lights!

We'll depart the Snaefellsnes peninsula and head towards Borgarnes, a picturesque town situated on a rocky peninsula. The views from this town and our b&b are outstanding! Mesmerizing! With two glaciers towering in the midst, Snaefellsjokull and Eiriksjokull, and the lovely sea right there at your fingertips. The sunsets are irresistible...

Adventurers will truly enjoy the two night stay at Borgarnes B&B with our hosts Bertha & Jay. Breakfasts and dinners will be covered for your stay. Every quaint room has a view of the gardens or of the sea or both. There's a huge window at the far end of the dining room that captures incredible bird life both in the yard and on the water. Binoculars are available for viewing close up and honestly, just take a couple steps outside and you're right in the mix!

We'll be sure to get in our yoga practices - outdoors if the weather is just right. Adventurers will also enjoy more hiking and sightseeing as we make our way to waterfalls and nature trails.

We'll visit the community pool with toasty outdoor hot tubs that's just a short walk from the b&b. And, for the Iceland Adventure, we will not miss horseback riding on the infamous Icelandic horses! They are beautiful, well-cared for and ready to ride off into the sunset with us...

Eventually, we'll have to start back towards the airport on Friday. Adventurers can decide whether they need a little more contact with the Iceland wild lands or time to check out downtown Reykjavik or perhaps a bit of both...

There is a great cafe, Glo, in the city that is super tasty that we may want to take advantage of before our flights.

A stroll thru Reykjavik is pretty sweet with an abundance of artwork, eccentric museums, European architecture, and more...

The Iceland Adventure will be chock full of nature, yoga, yummy food and friendship. Excursions & entrance fees are covered. Flight is not included but most meals (the important ones!) are. WOW airlines has a direct flight from Boston which is the recommended 5 hr and 40 minute flight for adventurers. The cost is in the $450 range. Departure is at 7pm on Sunday, September 10th with a return flight at 3:30pm on Friday, September 15th.

Cost: $1,700/early bird; $1,900/June 9th & beyond

Registration for this super fabulous adventure simply takes a click on the link below. Please feel free to contact Holly Twining, MYA founder. maineyogaadventures@gmail.com or 207-299-0082.

Costa Rica Adventure

  • Nosara Costa Rica

Join Maine Yoga Adventures on a return adventure to gorgeous Nosara, Costa Rica! This special place will enchant your heart & soul. Surfing, yoga, nature in abundance, yummy food, good people, new friendships, and more await.

Dori McCormick Photography

Dori McCormick Photography

Nosara, is a small bumpy roaded village in the Nicoya Peninsula, on the northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Its remoteness has long kept the crowds away, but surfers, yogis and adventurers know it’s special and have been making pilgrimages there for years.

Enjoy a full week of adventuring at our private oasis Casa De Alces - luxurious, tropical, and inspiring. We'll have this spectacular space to ourselves to truly share an extraordinary experience together.

So many ways to relax with the open air rancho style property boasting several lounging areas, multiple fountains, lush landscaping, two strategically placed outdoor showers to rinse off in, and an amazing saltwater pool to slide into and soothe yourself from the sun & heat. An added design speciality to the pool is the convenient swim up tiki bar and I'm sure MYA will be happy to share some refreshments with you!

Another appealing aspect of our casa is the second floor open space perfect for yoga sessions, ease of movement and bringing our community together. A lovely spot for gentle partner yoga! Past adventurers loved using balcony railings for stretching and we can certainly make that happen again...

second floor.jpg

Our cook will have two fully equipped custom kitchens with stainless steel appliances, one outdoors and one indoors to work her magic. Sophia Palange, professional cook, will whip up artful, tantalizing meals that maintain a local fresh sensibility full of flavor. She'll have a lot more space to create this time around!

IMG_2594.jpg

Adventurers will have full access to the kitchens as well. Mixing up smoothies is all part of the Nosara vibe!

The casa has seven bedrooms consisting of three master suites (2 king, 1 queen - the suites are only open to two adventurers to share, not for single use), one double queen casita, single queen private casita, single queen bedroom and a queen bunkbed room are available for adventurers.

The beach, with a completely undeveloped and ecologically dense shoreline, is just a stroll away. Birding is incredible as well as sightings of howler monkeys, butterflies, dragonflies, iguanas, crabs, geckos, cool foxlike Costa Rican squirrels, etc. The buzzing of bees in the bright tropical flowers is heard alongside the sounds of the surf.

Dori McCormick Photography

Dori McCormick Photography

Adventurers will be moments away from one of the best surfing beaches in the world in Playa Guiones. We'll have our incredible surfing instructor, Scott Anchors, very generous and kind, assisting everyone in riding the waves with ease. Beginner surfers and more advanced surfers welcome!

The beach is a wonderful spot to gather and watch the infamous, jaw dropping Nosara sunset. Both locals and visitors treasure those brief moments with spectacular hues.

Sunrise yoga practices are sweet on the beach. Cool and quiet with the soft and smooth sand underfoot. If you can rouse yourself early Nosara definitely rewards you with it's beauty.

Bike rentals are a great option to explore for not only around town but for nearby beaches as well. We’ll be arriving right around turtle nesting season and on the lookout for large shelled and slow but highly motivated ocean friends. The people you'll meet who live, work & play in Nosara are warm & welcoming and very willing to help you speak espanol!

Cost of the adventure includes vegetarian/vegan breakfasts & dinners, surfing lessons & surfboard, accommodations for seven nights, a gorgeous private casa w/ pool, two daily yoga practices, stunning wildlife sightings, good people full of positive energy...

  • $4,600/2 adventurers in King Suite;

  • $4,500/2 adventurers in Queen Suite;

  • $4,400/2 adventures in queen casita

  • $2,500/private queen casita

  • $4,400/2 adventurers queen bedroom

  • $2,500/private queen bedroom

  • $2,400/per adventurer double queen casita;

  • $2,300 bunk room

Price does not include flight to & from Liberia or shuttle transportation to Nosara. Try to book early afternoon arrival and departure flights. Holly is more than happy to help you make arrangements.

Side Trips to consider:

Monteverde is a town in mountainous northwestern Costa Rica. It’s renowned for its biodiverse cloud forests and for outdoor pursuits from hiking to zip-lining. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve shelters countless wildlife species, including jaguars, ocelots and the colorfully plumed quetzal. The reserve’s well-marked trails cut through ferns and orchids, and overhead, hanging bridges allow walks amid the forest canopy.

Visit an incredible black sand beach, Ostional Wildlife Reserve, where Ridley Sea Turtles and their close relatives, Kemp's Sea Turtles, lay their eggs. Amazingly enough, Ostional is the only beach in the world where harvesting turtle eggs is legal. Scientists found that most of the eggs deposited in the first nights of a nesting period are destroyed by other turtles coming in later to dig their nests.

A private nature preserve about 4 miles from your room, Reserva Biologica Nosara, is 90 acres of beauty situated along the Nosara River. It is home to many species of plants, mangroves and wildlife.

Many different birds, such as seabirds, herons, waders, tukanes, motmots, manakins, etc. can be found in this area; altogether, more than 270 species. You may also catch a sighting of monkeys, coatis, raccoons, armadillos, snakes, anteaters, crabs, reptiles...

Other options that may entice you:

Bike rentals - week long rental

Ziplining with Miss Sky Canopy Tour (we LOVED it!)

Nearby yoga studios - Blue Spirit, Bodhi Tree, etc.

Spa time

Paddleboarding/Kayaking

Horseback Riding

Coffee Plantation Tour and more...

IMG_4686.jpg

From the park, adventurers will head out to Nocturnem Draft Haus to meet up with our guide and driver of The Growler Bus. With some snacks and a growler to go, we'll hop on board and head out to our first stop, Penobscot Bay Brewing and Winterport Winery.

Owned by Michael and Joan Anderson, the winery and tasting room will host us with brewery offerings as well as fruit wines and cider. Their gift shop is filled with their own delicious creations as well as other Maine-made products.

Adventurers will then head back on the bus to Threshers Brewing Company in Searsmont.

Threshers is one of Maine's newest breweries. Two former carpenters with a thirst for creativity and better beer, opened their location to give the locals a destination to slake their thirst in the quaint village.

At this stop, adventurers will partake in some yummy vegetarian bbq from the food truck (the meats on you if thats what you crave). Next up is Marshall Wharf Brewing Co. in Belfast...

A perennial favorite right on the water, MW mixes traditional brews with an awesome dose of eclectic. David and the crew are always pushing the envelope with their brews. Maine Yoga Adventures can't wait to meet them!

There will be plenty of yoga at every stop including 'flow' by fab adventurer and birthday girl Amy Whitmore (yes, we will be celebrating!). We'll play outdoors as well! MYA will turn up the dance tunes and we'll get our groove on between destinations on the bus! Yahooooo....

Art & Happy Endings Adventure

  • University of Maine Museum of Art

Join Maine Yoga Adventures for an extraordinary immersion into the outdoors, meditation, art and fanciful refreshments!

The adventure will begin outdoors along the Kenduskeag Stream Trail, a beautiful riverside woodland trail in downtown Bangor; a true gem nestled into the city. We'll take a short stroll along the water's edge to get our bodies moving and our minds clear.

Adventurers will then enter a room dimly lit and calming at the University of Maine Art Museum for guided meditation. Our gentle yoga practice will focus on pranayama (breathing techniques) and simple stretching to alleviate stress and promote health & wellbeing.

Adventurers will then give over to an art experience. Education Coordinator, Kat Johnson, will lead a tour through the galleries. Johnson has her MFA in Intermedia and has exhibited her own work nationally and throughout the state of Maine.

Johnson will guide us through the artworks of Brenton Hamilton: 20 years, a Maine artist whose work focuses on historic photographic processes; Siobhan McBride: Four Hour Fortune Cookie, who works primarily in gouache on paper to render places and scenes imbued with memories and psychological tension; and, Jared Cowan: Life of David, Maine-based sculptor, video and installation artist, who explores the monumental events in the life of Emilio David Mazzeo. Adventurers will also explore the permanent collection which is always engaging and thought provoking.

From the art museum, we'll move onto Happy Endings Martini, Tapas & Dessert Bar. Happy Endings is a fresh and new establishment that brings a unique flavor to the downtown scene. Adventurers will partake in a one of a kind drink, perhaps a yogatini, and heavenly tasty tapas.

Snowshoes & Poetry: Hirundo Adventure

  • Hirundo Wildlife Refuge

Rescheduled from Saturday, January 28th...

Join Maine Yoga Adventures for a wintertime adventure at Hirundo Wildlife Sanctuary. We’ll snowshoe, practice yoga, eat yummy food, and write our hearts out with local author and artist Cheryl Daigle.

The adventure will begin outdoors with a guided snowshoe, taking in all of the wondrous nature that the Hirundo Wildlife Refuge has to offer. Only 10 miles from the University of Maine, Orono, the refuge is a 2,400 acre nature preserve, spanning Pushaw and Dead Streams, Lac d’Or (lake), vast wetlands, including a gently raised bog, Silver Maple Floodplain Forest, mixed hardwood and evergreen forests.

Holly, once a naturalist for Maine Audubon, will share some cold weather wildlife secrets for survival in wintertime habitats.  Please bring your own snowshoes or let us know if you need a pair. *If there is limited snow, adventurers will still get outside and enjoy the lovely grounds of Hirundo, simply with boots rather than snowshoes.

Along our walk, we'll practice some gentle yoga in our snowshoes (or boots), both solo and using each other for support. No worries, absolute beginners welcome!

Afterwards adventurers will warm up inside the Hirundo shelter with hot drinks and vegetarian soup.

We'll draw our focus to Cheryl Daigle who will lead us into a poetry workshop: leaning into hope & action through the spoken word.

This workshop will acknowledge the new political climate within which we find ourselves and will provide a space to reflect on what inspires us to action. Cheryl will include audio of writers who inspire her. Adventurers will have a terrific time with writing exercises and sharing their work aloud. Again, beginners are welcome, no published work of your own necessary. Come & raise your voice!

Costa Rica Adventure

  • Nosara Costa Rica

SOLD OUT

Yes, the Costa Rica Adventure is full but, please feel free to contact Holly with questions and possibilities! 207-299-0082 or maineyogaadventures@gmail.com

Leave your routine behind and join Maine Yoga Adventures on an incredible weeklong adventure in a gorgeous place! The charm of Nosara, Costa Rica will enchant your heart and soul.

It’s not every day that you step out from a sunset surf or yoga session into a jungle habitat of howler monkeys dangling in leafy guarumo trees, cicadas conducting a symphony, and a pair of white-nosed coati — raccoon-like animals with striped tails and masks — strolling across a dirt road, sending geckos darting out of their path.

Nosara, is a small bumpy roaded village in the Nicoya Peninsula, on the northwest Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Its remoteness has long kept the crowds away, but surfers, yogis and adventurers know it’s special and have been making pilgrimages there for years.

We’ll experience Nosara as a small group of adventurers with a certified yoga teacher, a surfing instructor and a chef along for the ride. Holly Twining, founder of MYA will lead the yoga practices (at least 2 daily), Scott Anchors will lead us through the surf, and Sophia Palange will inspire us with her culinary expertise. The meals will be vegetarian and sourced locally.

Holly, MYA Founder & Sophia, Professional Chef

Holly, MYA Founder & Sophia, Professional Chef

Natural wonders abound within the seaside landscape. You’ll see plenty of howler monkeys and hear their unique calls as well, birds are in abundance as well as spectacular looking reptiles, iguanas. Throughout the dunes and beyond are gorgeous butterflies, dragonflies and the buzzing of busy bees in the bright tropical flowers. And, the people, well, they are warm & welcoming and very willing to help you work on speaking espanol!

Our accommodations are at Surf City Suites, vacation rentals. We'll take over two top level suites with wrap around porches and kitchens. Adventurers can partake in a pool, lovely gardens, and hammocks perfect to escape midday heat.

Top level Surf City Suite

Top level Surf City Suite

The hotel is just a short walk from the beach where you’ll take part in surfing lessons, yoga, bird watching, mini tennis, breathtaking sunsets, etc. Bike rentals are a great option to explore not only town but nearby beaches. We’ll be arriving right around turtle nesting season so we’ll be on the lookout for large shelled and slow but highly motivated ocean friends.

You can decide if you want a quiet night in or experience the music of the small surfside town. Live music happens on a nightly basis and of course, dancing. Another superb option is walking the beach in the nighttime underneath the stars watching for the occasional scurrying crab...

Early bird registration before November 1st Cost: $1,600 twin bed; $1,700 queen bed; $3,000 couple sharing queen

Cost after Nov 1: $1,800 twin bed; $1,900 queen bed; $3,400 couple sharing a queen bed

Price includes daily continental breakfast, 3 vegetarian lunches & 3 vegetarian dinners, mixed level yoga, surf lessons, mini tennis, like minded adventurers full of positive energy, and more...

4 square on the beach is awesome!

4 square on the beach is awesome!

Price does not include flight to & from Liberia or shuttle transportation to Nosara. (Holly is more than happy to help you make arrangements.)

Bike rentals - week long rental $75 (we’ll have limited quantities available)

Ziplining

Nearby yoga studios - Nosara Yoga Institute, Blue Spirit, Bodhi Tree, etc.

* Beer Advocate: In the late 1800s fresh beer was carried from the local pub to home via a small-galvanized pail. Rumor has it that when the beer sloshed around it created a rumbling sound as the CO2 escaped through the lid, thus the term "growler" was coined.

The lodges, designed and built in the early 1900’s, are authentic “Rustic Adirondack” style log buildings. The Main Lodge will sleep 8, The Dining Lodge will sleep 9 people. The Cliff Cabin has capacity for 1 person (or 1 couple). The Maine Lodge, Dining Lodge and Cliff Cabin share common kitchen and bathroom facilities.

This adventure is designed so that you can choose your level of physical activity: take it up, bring it down or a bit of both. MYA will provide multiple mixed level yoga practices. We will hike Borestone Mountain and alternative hikes are offered as well that are just as gorgeous. Kayaking or canoeing is available and if you're bold enough, you could go for a dip. Our night hike from last year will definitely be repeated! as well as an outdoor fire, stargazing, and wine tasting...

Bedrooms come with sheets, pillows, pillowcases, blankets and down comforters. There is a mix of single, double and multiple occupancy bedrooms available. Solar powered electricity, with a generator back-up, provides lighting in the common areas of the lodge and limited electric service in all bedrooms.

Two fieldstone fireplaces are in the dining room and living room with paper, kindling, and firewood provided.

MYA will bring healthy vegetarian food. We'll bring ourselves together as a community for cooking and preparing meals. You don't want to miss out on Holly's famous soup or Jenny's asian dressing - yum!

Cost: $400/2 nights; $600/3 nights (Thurs-Sun)
