Zipping, Castling & Skiing Adventure

MYA is headed to the beautiful White Mountains region of New Hampshire for a wicked fun packed weekend adventure including winter ziplining, nighttime ice castle exploring, downhill skiing (cross country if you prefer), and more…

Friday eve will get settled into our accommodations, our own private home with hot tub! We’re very close to town, walking distance to Lincoln and 1 mile away from Loon Mountain. Arrival time is very flexible (the house is open at 3pm). We’ll check out our space and be sure to stretch out the drive, enjoy happy hour and indulge in a hearty vegetarian meal.

Our spacious country colonial has warmth and ambiance with a wood burning stove, wood floors, an open kitchen area, living and dining room. Adventurers can also kick back in the extra den, enjoy one of the two huge decks, or sit by the fire pit and watch the stars. We’ll have nine cozy bedrooms to spread out in and 2.5 baths.

winter zip2.jpg

Saturday, after breakfast and a yoga practice, adventurers have a date in Lincoln with Alpine Adventures for winter ziplining. They opened the first, longest, highest and fastest Zipline Canopy Tour in New England in 2006. Our adrenaline will be pumping on this wintertime thrill ride! Our guides will keep us safe and secure as we zip over the canopy with outstanding views.

ice castles 2.jpg

We’ll come back to our fab pad to relax and eat some yummy food before heading out for nighttime fun - a visit to the Ice Castles! Adventurers will explore icy layers and tunnels in a real-life version of the movie Frozen. The castles are enshrouded in an aurora borealis and lit from within in a rainbow of colors.

Sunday funday can be adventurer’s choice! Loon Mountain is close by and has wonderful downhill runs. Cross-country skiing is awesome there too, their network of wide trails makes for a perfect way to explore the White Mountains. The cross-country runs vary as does the downhill experience from beginner trails to more advanced. Loon also has a skating pond that we may like to check out - fun!

Adventurers can purchase their downhill skiing tickets online or if there are enough of us, MYA can purchase as a group. If you prefer cross-country skiing no worries, their trail prices are very affordable.

This is going to be the perfect start to the new year! Don’t miss out on adventuring with yoga, healthy vegetarian food, awesome accommodations, winter ziplining (yes, if you don’t want to partake you can still come on this adventure), ice castles, striding thru town, playtime in the snow and more…

maybe we’ll get in some snowga too!

maybe we’ll get in some snowga too!

Cost: $425/twin or double; $450/queen; $800/shared queen; $300 If you’d like to come and enjoy all of the goodness of the adventure sans ziplining :)

Costa Rican Sea Turtles Adventure

Maine Yoga Adventures is coming together with outstanding nonprofit conservation organization, Earthwatch, to assist on a 9 day Costa Rican Sea Turtles Expedition. Following our volunteer work, adventurers will spend extra time in Playa Grande with plenty of yoga, healthy vegetarian food, surf time and more!

Adventurers are free to choose just the expedition or just the adventure or both :)

1463069334511.jpeg

Lead scientist Frank Paladino, Professor of Biology, Indiana-Purdue University, has a research team to help gain a better understanding of the ecology of endangered turtles that nest on the beaches of Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas. These beaches host the largest remaining population of leatherback turtles in the Eastern Pacific as well as important populations of olive ridley and East Pacific green turtles.

The work will consist of...

  • Observing and monitor nesting leatherbacks. Those working on the beach at night will visit each nesting leatherback to take measurements and record any unusual markings or injuries—in other words, you’ll get as close as a person can to these majestic animals.

  • Release hatchlings in the ocean. When babies start to emerge from the eggs in the hatchery, our team will take the tiny turtles down to the water's edge and release them into the wild.

  • Survey the beach. During the day, our team will count sea turtle nests on the beach, take nest temperatures, and look for signs of erosion that could put nests in danger.

earthwatch.jpeg

Accommodations are at the Goldring Marine Biology Field Station perched at the edge of the beach. Team MYA will share a bedroom with bunk beds - if our numbers are 6 or more we're working solo with researchers. We'll have plenty of space to lounge at the pool or in the hammock. Typical tasty Costa Rican breakfasts and dinners of beans will be served up as well as ingredients for simple delicious lunches.

Adventurers can create an expedition fund through Earthwatch to receive tax-deductible donations to cover volunteering costs ($2,845 accommodations & food; flight is not included) or use another contribution platform such as GoFundMe.

paladino-costa-rican-sea-turtles-c.-joan-burnett-h-10_5200.jpg

Be sure to mention to possible donors that the former Principal Investigator for this project, Nathan Robinson, is the scientist seen removing a straw from a turtle’s nostril in what is considered to be the viral video responsible for straw bans!

Post-research expedition, adventurers will head to their own beautiful private space located further south. Also directly on the beach in close proximity to the estuary. It's the perfect site for hammock lounging, yoga, meditation, group meals, playing in the surf...

Nature is abundant in this peaceful place. Nicely secluded in our backyard the glorious Costa Rican sunsets will reveal themselves!

As a delightful contrast, we're not far from the bustling town of Tamarindo with restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. We'll hit the the dance floor at the disco for a well-rounded adventure! So much more than a yoga retreat...

rachel.jpg

Casa Mandarina boasts a fully equipped kitchen that Rachel Hicks, our cook from Virginia, will work her magic in. Rachel comes to MYA with a vibrant passion for the outdoors, sustainability, food, and wellness. A yoga teacher with a masters in nutrition, Rachel has led retreats and workshops in her wheelhouse of health and well-being.

This will be MYA's 4th journey to Costa Rica via the airport in Liberia. Founder, Holly Twining, will fly from Boston, if adventurers feel more comfortable with a travel buddy. Flights are below $500.

To secure your spot on the team, Earthwatch will receive an initial contribution, a nonrefundable $300 deposit. Adventurers can use the fund for the deposit as well. If you're ready to commit to the expedition call Zach Zimmerman at 978-450-1226.

We’ll practice yoga, eat healthy vegetarian food, play in the waves, and immerse ourselves in nature and culture. If you’ve never been to CR, this is the perfect introduction to pura vida.

Adventurers will gather at Casa Mandarina (for some, following volunteer time on a sea turtle focused Earthwatch expedition), a beautiful private house located directly on the beach. Ocean views fill almost every room with hammocks for relaxing, a large swimming pool for soaking, and quick access to sand & surf. During the day the doors open up from wall to wall to let in amazing water views, seaside breezes, and sound of waves.

The main house has 3 spacious bedrooms; two of which share a beach front patio so everyone can enjoy the view. The 4th bedroom is in a separate building near the pool, complete with private bath, a queen size bed and three twin beds.

Sweetly tucked in our oasis the glorious Costa Rican sunsets will reveal themselves - the fluctuation of light and color seems like no other, a sight to savor.

Playa Grande is a cool little town with a relaxed beach vibe and friendly people. If adventurers would like to book tours, massage, surf lessons, etc. MYA is happy to arrange it all for you and probably get in on the fun too!

This will be MYA's fourth journey to Costa Rica via the airport in Liberia. Founder, Holly Twining, flies out of Boston and currently flights are still below $500.

Join Maine Yoga Adventures on a fourth fabulous playtime in the snow with Maine Huts & Trails!

IMG_7110.JPG

MYA is always happy to support this nonprofit organization whose mission is to create and operate a world-class system of backcountry trails and eco-lodges for people-powered recreation for the benefit of current and future generations.

We loved it so much that we’re heading back to last season’s beautiful Flagstaff Hut situated on the dramatic stretch of Flagstaff Lake (once a town now a waterway).

The adventure begins on a groomed wooded trail that leads us for about two miles on gentle inclines and declines to the hut. Adventurers can choose to either cross-country ski, fat bike, or snowshoe. Often the conditions on the trails can tell us which transportation system will work best :)

Some of us will take it slow (no fear beginners!) others may enjoy a brisker pace. Lisa Carter with wilderness first aid & plenty of outdoor experience will be our co-leader, helping out adventurers along the way. All are responsible for backpacking their own gear in - pack light.

Once at the hut, we’ll unload gear and head back out for more skiing and/or snowshoeing. We'll also practice some snowga (yoga in the snow) - fun!

After playtime in the snow, we’ll warm up in front of the fire inside the stunning Flagstaff Hut. The hut offers up fantastic vegetarian food (dinner, breakfast and lunch)! Adventurers are welcome to bring cash for wine and beer. In the morning we’ll sneak in another yoga practice then head back out to enjoy the lake and the trails taking our time leaving this very magical site.

Come together to share good company, snowga, laughter, stories, and more...

Katahdin Ascent Adventure

Embrace your sense of adventure with a wintertime ascent of Katahdin with MYA and Acadia Mountain Guides! This will be our second time up the mountain and space goes fast…

IMG_8021.JPG

The remote location and arctic environment of Katahdin makes it one of the most rewarding winter alpine ascents in New England. Reaching the summit at any time of year is awesome but in winter it holds more magic and less people.

Our climb begins with a half-day snowshoe or ski to the base of the mountain where winter camping skills and mountaineering skills are taught. We start the climb the next morning and return back to trailhead by early evening.

This trip is physically demanding but requires no experience. Adventurers are lead by winter mountaineering guides.

Included in the adventure is climbing instruction, park fees, micro spikes, crampons, ice axe, avalanche safety equipment when necessary, double boots, skis, snowshoes, dinner, breakfast, and -20 degree sleeping bags.

IMG_8040.jpg

Holly, Founder of MYA will toss in yoga whenever time permits. We'll be sure to get in some deep breaths and stretching - the climbing boots make it pretty sweet to balance!

Adventurers are responsible for their own clothing, lunch, and snacks. All climbers receive 15% off for life at Alpenglow Adventure Sports at 92 Main Street, Orono and at AlpenglowGear.com. We’ll have a meetup, a gear shakedown, in the store prior to hitting the ascent to make sure every adventurer is prepared, time and date to be announced.

katahdin group.JPG

As we never know what the weather and mountain will provide for conditions during the climb, sometimes it is pleasant and sunny, others its windy with whiteout conditions; adventurers can choose to spend Sunday eve at a hotel in Millinocket.

Cost: $275. To commit to the challenge, simply add to cart below.

The homestead was built in 1889 and allows adventurers plenty of space to spread out into with five lovely bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room and dining room to share. Of course MYA will be using the kitchen space to whip up tasty vegetarian dinners and breakfasts. Lunches will be open to adventurers and most likely up to where our adventures take us either in town or on the slopes or at the homestead. Leftovers are usually an option too!

IMG_6919.JPG

Saturday and Sunday will be snowga and ski fundays! No worries about snowga, it’s just yoga in the snow, experience is never a necessity. A sense of humor is always best for yoga outdoors as well as snowpants that are on the looser side!

For our skiing pleasure, Big Rock Mountain in Mars Hill is less than a half hour drive and the Nordic Heritage Center is only 5 minutes away. MYA is happy to cover lift tickets for adventurers that are into downhill skiing but please know if you’d like to adventure without going downhill, that’s no problem, snowshoeing, snow sculpturing, cross-country skiing, small town shopping, and homestead chillaxin’ are always available.

If you have your own skis and snowshoes, bring them along and if you want to try out your fat or plus tire bikes on the trails, that’s an another fun option for snow play!

Say goodbye to winter with a community of adventurers having fun in the snow! Join us for skiing, snowshoeing, snowga, yummy vegetarian food, sweet accommodations and much more…

Adventurers will enjoy indoor and outdoor yoga practices, dinners, breakfasts and plenty of time to explore nature. Machelle LaHaye, certified yoga teacher and outstanding vegetarian cook, will assist with cooking and yoga.

Following hiking at Snæfellsnes peninsula, we'll head north for an in-town experience in Blonduos, at the mouth of the river Blanda. Accommodations split into three again will offer plenty of space for cooking, eating, and relaxing. After settling in, we'll check out local scenery including the Hrutey Island nature trails. Adventurers may want to carve out time for Blonduos Sports Center for more hot pots and an amazing water slide! (Our guesthouse also has soaking possibilities.)

Our travels then take us to the spectacular Troll Peninsula, a hidden away Icelandic gem covered by high mountains, cliffs and green valleys. We'll drive an epic fairytale route to our lodge for two nights close to the small fishing community of Dalvik.

troll.jpg

Adventurers will take over a beautiful seven bedroom house with hot pot, sauna, kitchen, lounging areas, patio, and breathtaking ocean and mountain views. Immersed in nature, nothing besides rain can stop the northern lights from appearing! If that is not enough, there is a view that overlooks a massive fjord where whales can be spotted beneath the alpine landscape.

Mývatn Nature Baths, very similar to the Blue Lagoon will be an unbelievable side trip! We'll head there via the quaint city of Akureyri, the northern center of trade and culture at the base of Eyjafjörður Fjord.

baths.jpg

The baths offer a relaxing dip in clouds of steam rising up from fissures deep in the earth’s surface and a luxurious bath in geothermal water. The blend of minerals, silicates and geothermal micro-organisms will benefit skin and spirit.

Following our lodge stay, we'll head south towards Reykjavik dropping into Borgarnes to stretch our legs and take in more sweet views from a small coastal town then move on to spend our final eve cozied up at an opulent three bedroom holiday home.

Adventurers will have plenty of time to play before heading to the airport or, maybe you're looking to extend your stay - awesome!

Cost: $2,000 before August 1; $2,200 after deadline; $1,000 deposit to hold your space

The cost includes touring through an incredible country, daily yoga practices, breakfasts and dinners, 5 night accommodations, nature baths, hiking, hot pots, great energy, fabulous people and so much more...the cost does not include airfare but the rates are quite good from WOW Airlines and they dress in super cool shades of purple. You may want to put horseback riding in your itinerary (happy to arrange it, we had a blast last time!) it would be an additional expense.

Please do not hesitate to contact Holly, founder of MYA, with questions.

Here are a few more pics from previous adventures - enjoy!

Tuscany Adventure

 View from the Spannocchia tower

View from the Spannocchia tower

Maine Yoga Adventures is heading to Spannocchia, the perfect place for adventuring into the heart of Tuscany, Italy.

Organic farm and educational center, Spannocchia is nothing short of magical. Twelve miles west of Siena, Spannocchia boasts beautiful vistas, awesome hiking, verdant gardens, superb culinary classes, a lovely swimming pool, adorable farm animals, fantastic wine, amazing food, great people, and more...

our home for the week - Casetta al Padule

our home for the week - Casetta al Padule

Casetta al Padule will be our private oasis for a full week. MYA will offer breakfasts and dinners to adventurers - we'll keep our options open for lunches dependent on where our adventuring takes us. Wine tastings! Olive oil tastings! Nature walks! Thermal pools!

padulenew (29).jpg

Decorative details of the casetta feature the local yellow Sienese marble – a buttery stone marbled with ochre and bronze veins. The open layout is perfect for our group, and its location next to a pasture provides lovely morning views of cows grazing as the fog lifts from the valley. Four bedrooms create space for eight lucky adventurers!

The kitchen will be stocked for preparing delicious Tuscan style meals. A large covered terrace at the back of the house will highlight outdoor dining and gathering. Dinners will be split between the casetta and Spannocchia restaurant for a fully immersive experience.

Adventurers will be sure to enjoy yoga every day, an excursion either on or beyond the property, and free time to simply soak in the atmosphere (and soak in the pool!). Our group will have an onsite cooking class as well as a wine tasting.

MYA will have two vehicles for ease off-site adventuring. We'll enjoy a day in the city of Siena, explore quaint villages, connect with culture, art and nature. Some possibilities...

San Galgano: Visit the remarkable circular chapel of Monte Siepi, site of the miraculous sword in the stone of Saint Galgano. A wine bar with outdoor seating and a terrific view of the valley and mountains to the west, holds the perfect spot for a sunset aperitivo.
Hot Springs: Relax at Antica Querciolaia thermal spa and Terme di San GIovanni hotel and thermal pools. Indulge in large heated pools - spa treatments are available! Entrance fee is about 15 Euro per adventurer. If we get our timing just right, baths are open late so we can experience thermal baths under the stars!
Colle Val d'elsa: Soak in this charming town off the beaten path with an incredible vegetarian restaurant and open air market on Fridays. And very close by is Colombaia, Biodynamic vineyard, a small production vineyard with incredible organic wines.
San Gimignano: Climb 15 of the original 72 towers that rise above the skyline for an impressive view of the surrounding countryside. The city developed according to a characteristic star-shaped plan along the ancient via Francigena.
Pienza: The city of cacio, cheese, MYA doesn't want to miss this! Adventurers may need cacio to go along with all of the splendid chianti we'll be tasting in the region.

Cost: $1,800 before Feb 1; $2,000 after Feb 1. Adventurers choose to pay $1,000 deposit or pay full adventure cost.

Cost does not include flight - the airport with closest proximity to Spannocchia is Florence but adventurers can fly into Rome and grab a ride in the rental car (Holly and other adventurers have committed to Rome on Friday and traveling to Siena on Saturday - joining us is definitely an option!).
